LO3: Pre-production

Factual programming

My idea was about Racism, the questions i focused were:

My idea was about Racism, the questions I focused on were:

-       Have you suffered racism in Sidney Stringer, if yes how?
-       Is Sidney Stringer doing enough to help and create awareness for racism?

Advantages of my idea

·      Sidney stringer is a multi-cultural school and majority of the school is made up of Asians, Europeans and Middle Eastern students.
·      Children in school could be interviewed
·      Teachers perspectives could also be looked at
·      Variety of views

Disadvantages of my idea

·      Sensitive topic
·      Students may not feel comfortable talking about racial abuse
·      May not have access to professional school documents
·      May not find expert witness

Overall Decision

From the different areas we looked at, we have realized that we are most interested in looking at media and how it affects individual’s influence of the body image.  We made our decision from our individual ideas. From our ideas we decided to select aspects from our individual ideas. We decided to take the aspect of young individuals from my idea and target it at those who are affected by self perception. Zahra topic on Racism allowed our decision to look at the impacts and effects that can cause on young individuals. Furthermore to this we aided around the Sahedul's Idea in racism. When Sahedul explored his idea he realized that the media has a lot of impact in this area and was drawn in by how media present information and topics furthermore general presentation of aspects in today's society. This aided our idea as a group to focus on individuals, aim at younger individuals, look at the impact and effect caused in addition to looking at the media. We then moved away from our central topics and decided that self perception is one thing our ideas had in common, this being that my idea looked at how individuals felt about Sidney Stringer and how strict they are, whereas Zahra looked at the self perception of bullying and impact it had and Sahedul's idea looked at Drugs and their influence. This led us away from our idea and to Body image and how we perceive our self in support of idea to look at the media and its affects. We as a group then decided to look further in how the media influence the self perception. The elements we liked as a group we then placed in together for our overall idea.

Selected as a group: Idea 4: Media & influence on body Image (Size)
How does the media affect the self perception of young people?
  • Expert Witness (Gym Instructors) – Boys
  •  What percentage of people come to see you about gym
  •  What is the most popular age range that come into the gym
  •  Anorexia ( Expert witnesses)
  •  Different age groups, (From yr 8 – 16+)
  •    Staff
  •   Insure male and female are included (Look at who is more affected)
  •        Change in Culture, in what is beautiful
  • Models and what they are presenting, Change in today's Society Plus Size models
  • Photo Editing and the impact on individuals
Overall message – Everyone is different so why is their so much pressure to be the same.

Research

To start our research I am going to use an Interview which will be aimed at women mainly to concentrate fully on them and then do another questionnaire aimed towards men. I will do a Focus group targeting wide range of individuals including men and asking of their opinions. Furthermore to this I will also include a questionnaire looking at men and the impact of media on them as a separate focus, this is so that I can get the opposing side in account as well. I will also use the internet to research into my project, I will not use Wikipedia and search engines as they are biased and Wikipedia can be edited and changed. What I will look at on the internet to help with my project is the BBC, Daily Telegraph. I will be using information form these websites as they will give me accurate information which then allow me to back my ideas up.

The Websites I will use to help my Research is, NHS – Health Issues from Anorexia, BBC News – Health issues on anorexia and Models airbrushing.

Advertisements/ Brochures and leaflets can also be used in my research as once again it will allow me to back my point up. Also as they will prove that Celebrities use air brushing to make there appearance look better and using these advertisement will allow me to prove my point however I will also consider other thoughts, this is so that I am not biased.

Plastic Surgery

  • First Point: Only meant to be used for Brunt’s/ Accidents – this was form the beginning and then it starting changing to the usage of whole public but not for issues but beauty. This is the area I will search to make my point on plastic surgery and so that I can we can see that the usage of plastic surgery in for injuries and other issues and not for beauty usage which not many people can afford. This is the information I have developed so far however with my research I will be able to expand and improve my point and evidence.
  • Second point: Promotions is another area I will research to investigate my project, they use promotions to encourage and get people to get plastic surgery done, this is again referring to unrealistic expectations as we would be able to pay for all the plastic surgery or expectations required to be beautiful as an average person will just not have enough money for it.
  • Third Point: Forcing others to be involved, this is also linked to promotion however it is when you get offers such as for example Bring a Friend and get a free nose job this is forcing and getting others involved which who really not interested in.
Models – Size Zero / Air Brushing

Issues caused from anorexia – NHS health problems will allow me to identify different area of issues models have.
  • Newspaper article could help as it will not be biased and it will give suitable evidence and statistics.
  • Airbrushing in magazines shown as evidence also before and after images is helpful as well.
  • Library – old journals/Books this will allow me to have different ways to research my question so that I have a range of evidence to compare and contrast and the book I will be looking for is something to do with the ‘the history of fashion.
  • Questionnaire – this is a primary source which allows me to look at different way to identify and gather my information to allow my information to be as accurate as possible.

Note on BBC news articles

BBC News: size zero = twig… nice

  • Size4 UK/ size 0 US  equals a 22 inch waist, average size of eight year olds.
  • People misjudge size zero however if you look closely symptoms such as – there skin being pale and dry, their hair would be dry as straw, their bones would stick out and you will always feel weak and ill.
  •  New size which is 00  which is a 20 inch waist and 32 inch hips equivalent to being the same size as a 6 or 7 year old.
  • 2 catwalk models died size 0. Luisel romos collapsed on the Uruguay’s fashion week after that she later died of heart failure.
  •  Size zero pill which is actually made for horses when they have problems of breathing, for humans it has rapid effect of weight loss. The side affects during this is high blood pressure and it you will not have a appetite.

BBC News: Plus size models champion ‘real’ women on catwalk

  • Plus size models – US size 12(UK size 16) and above and are in demand
  • “This shows is a validation of the 62% of American women who are plus size,” says Nancy (Nancy le writer, editorial directs of onestopplus.com, retailer for plus size women) Form the quote people may be encouraged to be happy with there size and our generation might gain more weight and have health issues of being fat.
  • “While I think it wonderful to celebrate the plus size. I think you also have to balance the fact that there’s a – pardon the pun- epidemic of obesity. So celebrate it. Yet recognize that as some points those larger sizes are not healthy.” This quote is also demonstrating the fact that not only are size 0 models have health issues but the plus size have health issues too this is an overall conclusion of what is healthy?
  • 28% of Americans are now obese- this is supporting my conclusion
  • BBC News: ‘size zero means cloths now fit me’
  • Statistics – “half of young women say they are unhappy with their bodies”

For our group topic I must review the current literature. This might be found;

  • On a Website (BBC News)
  • In a newspaper
  • In a Journal

Is ultra – thin going out of fashion?

The size zero may be reducing but not dramatically as shown in the BBC news and the only reason it had reduced is after “death of a 22-year-old Uruguayan model that collapsed after a catwalk show in August. She had reportedly eaten little but leafy vegetables for months in order to lose weight” and the action the fashion industries had taken was very poor as many models life’s are under risk and the fashion industries have mad minor improvements. This shows that the fashion industries are putting little impact in improving the health of models and after the causes of there decisions the fashion industries do not take drastic measures.  This is a website which is trustworthy and reliable as it is not biased as it gives facts and statistics.

Size 4 Model for Being Too Fat

I will use this article form the magazine as it shows and interpreters that magazines are encouraging and making women want to feel skinny. This source of research is not really reliable as it is biased and not accurate however with this I can show that magazines put pressure in young women and make young women feel that they are not the right size as they are not the size that the models and the fashion industries portray to us women as the targeted audience. When you look at the image you see a lady which is already ultra skinny but however in fact she is called fat which is not true and young women then set there expectations in size which is very low and this brings depression and reduces self confidence.

Mood Board

Our Question and Topic Overlook

Our documentary will include two genres: Expository and Participatory. Nearly all documentaries on television are a combination of different genres.

Expository codes and conventions and how we will use them:

• The filmmaker remains hidden behind the camera, ignored by the surrounding environment he/she neither changes nor influences the actions/events being captured: parts of our documentary will conform to this convention.

• Keeps up with the action resulting in rough, shaky, often amateur-looking footage. Since nothing is staged for the camera, the camera rushes about to keep up: we will challenge this convention; we want to have a 'professional' look.

Participatory Conventions and how we will us them:

• Documentary maker (and crew) interact with subject: Sahedul will 'front' our documentary, however we will challenge the convention and not show the whole crew
• Interviews dominate but tend to be formal- literally ‘on the run’ questioning: we will challenge this convention by 'sitting' with the interviewees.
• Use of archive material- stills, news; footage, newspaper headlines and emails.
• Location shooting - handheld camera and tripod: hand held - walking around school and static camera for expert interviews.
• Long takes dominate: we will challenge this convention; log takes may bore the viewer.
• Synchronous (direct) sound recording: all our clips will have 'real' (diegetic) sound.
• Voiceover- usually by the documentary maker: Sahedul
• Documentary maker is visible to the audience- Interviews and participates in the action.

Exposition

Our exposition will include a montage of images related to our documentary topic. The exposition will give an overview of what we are going to be looking at. We will also include a voiceover; it will mention questions that will be answered later on within our documentary.

Material shaped into a narrative/story

As we are unaware of why young people are affected by their body, the research we have gained will explain some of the core reasons why young people are so affected by their body. Towards the end of the documentary, we will be more aware as to why and how important body image is to young individuals.

Material shaped into an argument

The stats we gain will help us to build an argument on our chosen topic. Also, expert advice and interviews from young individuals will give the audience a variety of views. The audience will then be able to make a judgement on the information that has been presented to them.

 Treatment

Our documentary idea looks at how does the media affect the self-perception of young people? We will look into the physical and mental impact of body image. We will also look at affecting factors to the body image such as plastic surgery, anorexia and bulimia. During filming we may decide to narrow some these topics down for a more specific focus and results.

As whole looking at our documentary we are able to see that a wide range of individuals will be interested in watching. The appeal in our target audience is for young people aged between 13 and older. The reason being that most individuals will be interested to see how the media impacts individual’s perception and also see if they are too. It is a great way for young people to have some relation to the information being provided. Furthermore our target audience can also include parents as they will be concerned about their children and may be very interested in the impact of media.

The time slot for our production will be around later periods in the evening this being that younger individuals will be watching television and therefore more interest can be created this way. Furthermore the timings that we as a group feel best suit our documentary is around 6pm- 9.30pm. We are interested in having our documentary aired on channels such as BBC Three as they are well known for documentaries and BBC One. These will be our interest for our documentary to be on.

In terms of our group budget we are able to see that it will not be very expensive for us to conduct as we will only be requiring limited amount of technology and will only be using one camera. However it may cost us more to gain professional and expert witnesses as they may be more reluctant to star in our production. However as a whole we as a group are able to say that our budget in filming will be at an acceptable pricing for us to be able to cover.

VOICEOVER Script

Introduction of our documentary will consist in looking at the following factors and topics.

  1.       Who defines what is beautiful?
Use of imagery

·         Slim, Golden Hair, Green Eyes, Perky Nose, Clear Skin, Full Lips,Flat Stomach, Long legs, White Teeth

Why is Beauty so Important in today’s Society The definition of beauty has changed overtime
Type of Imagery that will be used:
Images - http://sorockyhorror.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/beauty-over-ages-70s.html
Looking over the years allows a great opportunity for individuals to be able to see the change that beauty has had and what it is now. We are able to see the changes but also some developments. This can be a great way to introduce individuals to our documentary theme. Everyone is different so why is there so much pressure to be the same.

Locations

Sidney stringer school is where we will be gaining most of our research from, we will be asking many young individuals in our school for their views.Sidney Stringer Academy, One of the areas we decided to record in was in School, this being that many individuals in school are what we are looking for, this in terms of age. We are looking for young individuals therefore a school will be a great way to get a mixture of different individuals within our production for media.

We as a group will also be going round in the different departments within the school to gain expert opinions. This being for example from the image above the sport facilities so that we are able to talk to the teachers who teach sport and see their views on body image. Furthermore we will go to areas such as the Humanities so that we are able to speak to a sociology and psychology teachers to see the impacts of body image mentally. And finally the nurses within the school to see their views on anorexia and bulimia.

Stills of your group on the shoot

This is Bahno recording an individual for our factual programming, I am able to see that to insure that our interview went as planned. We switched roles in the group. This being that I was now reading the interview questions. For our production process in filming we shared and switched roles to insure that we could complete the interviews at a good standard.
This is also Sahedul above, recording for our factual programming.

This is me recording one of the interviews for the factual programing. Bahno read out the questions to the individuals and Sahedul got their agreement and informed them about our documentary.

Expert Profiles & Interview Casting Agreements
Mrs. Baruchi (Psychology expert) - she is a teacher who studied Psychology in university and did a degree in that subject, so she will know how somebodies mind works, how their body language is and what it is portraying etc.
Joe from the gym - he is an ex body builder who trained and competed in big competitions around the world for bodybuilding. He also trained others to become body builders, he knows about the human body and how it works. He has knowledge in that subject more than just a normal man.

Veronica (Counselor) - this person is like a mentor to the people who are having trouble with their lives, for example she talks to people who are getting bullied and are experiencing trouble with the school. She works in a school setting and she is a really good role model to the kids who don't have a voice for themselves.

Nurses - they will be interviewed as they will know what kids do outside of school etc, for example if they don't eat then they could confide in the nurse and tell them how they feel. Also the nurses will know about people and how they have affected by the media for example, girls and boys may go to the nurse to talk about their body image as they trust the nurses.

Female students (2) - two female students will be interviewed to find out how the media affects them and what they do. For example they may be affected by the media which makes them want to feel slimmer and look like their celebrity so by asking them how it has affected them we will be able to voice their opinions through our video.

Male students (2) - the male students will also be interviewed to find out how the media affects them and what they do. For example they may also be affected by the media which makes them want to feel bigger or trimmed down so that they look like their celebrity so by asking them how it has affected them we will be able to voice their opinions through our video.

Story board

For our documentary we are not able to predict exactly however we can briefly show what our exposition will consist of and how we will interview some individuals within our documentary as shown below from the drawings and the explanations:

The next images will look into the interviews that we will be conducting as shown below:

Looking at this image above you are able to see the following factors and reasons for including them:
  • We will be looking into how body weight affects young people, therefore their are image of males and females that we will be asking about this question to be able to see their response.
  • Their will be a mixture of individuals asked within our documentary this ranging from a wide range of our year groups in school, this being from Year 7 to the 16+ department.
The final image within our storyboard is shown below:

We as a group will also be focusing on the following:
  • We will look into how celebrities influence young people
  • As a group we will ask many individuals this question, this being once again to the young individuals, we will insure that their is both male and female individuals included.
  • We will also ask experts on the matter, from the images above we will insure that the way they are presented is in a positive light, this being in the sense of the environment they are in. To make the inforamtion that we are providing to the audience more serious to the audience, we will insure that we have them in an office area to show professionalism and more serious environment allowing more power to be provided to what they are saying.

Diary Log

Friday 15th February

We selected our groups for our documentary, our group consisted of me, Bahno and Sahedul. We then decided to begin briefly looking at different documentaries as a group and see what was out there and what our interests are.  We just gathered and looked at interests to allow us to make clearer decisions in what we wanted to do as a group.

Friday 22nd February

We began looking at the different ideas that we as a group were interested in, we went on to look at our own ideas and gather some understanding about it. We as a group came round and decided on what we wanted to include within our production. We then informed on another about our ideas and looked into the pros and cons. From this we then decided on what we wanted to do as a group.

Friday March 1st

As a group we started producing our written work, we started as a group gaining research on the documentary. We also produced a questionnaire and completed our first focus of three individuals and their thoughts. We set a deadline to collect the questionnaire results between us for next lesson.

Friday 8th March

We brought together our results and provided the results. Furthermore to this we began looking at what we wanted to include within our documentary. We looked at the exposition and what we wanted to include and also the different people we wanted to interview, furthermore we produced the questions we wanted in the first hours of the lesson.

In the second lesson we then went onto looking at the other aspects that we needed to take in account, this being for example the risk assessment, Mood-board and so on for the group. For us to be able to complete this in the second lesson we set out our Roles and responsibilities allowing us to insure that we are able to complete the tasks required. We set deadlines for this being complete by next week or the following week. The third lesson we used to start these deadlines.

Friday 15thMarch

We began recording our voice over for the exposition, and getting the footage we required as a group for the documentary. As a group we were able to get this done, me and Bahno also then started to edit this and start a framework for our factual programming.

Friday 22nd March

Me and Bahno went around school gaining the expert staff that we needed for our documentary, we gained all the footage we required however one of the teachers were unavailable therefore we had to find an alternative date. We also had to find a replacement for the Gym Instructor as he was unavailable.

Tuesday 19th March

During this day we completed the expert witnesses that we needed, furthermore to this we also went around gaining students that we required for the recording.

Wednesday 27th March

On this day me and Bahno went out and gained any additional footage that we required, Sahedul also helped out in terms of any other voice overs that we required.

Friday 29th March

We as a group just went out on this day and got any more footage that we required, but also as a group insured that we gained any more expert that we could find or students. We gained more students that expert interviews.

Wednesday 3RD April

We began editing our footage together, we sat down as a group and sorted out the exposition that me and Bahno began and also included the additional footage we required.

Friday 5th April

Me and Bahno continued editing the footage that we gained from the recording that we as a group completed. Furthermore to this we spent time resorting the exposition from the improvements we decided.
